Description
standing alongside him a wonderfully surreal character who is in essence a giant green eyeball perched atop a segmented caterpillar-like body, looking out into the world with lashed wonderment – the two creating an immediate team of comic brilliance in its purest sense of absurdist delight. The blue bird is an incredible creation of comic character design, featuring a hugely overdone expression of utter exhaustion and boredom, electric blue feathered hair going in all directions, a comically exaggerated orange beak and a ridiculous necktie – all of which create a character so comical and memorable that it could star in its own animated show. Just like that, the eyeball-caterpillar creature is a genius when it comes to inventive absurdity, being a huge green iris with eyelashes sitting above the joyfully segmented body that consists of rings of red, orange, green and teal colors with legs running on the grass in a repulsive yet totally cute manner, while there is a tiny pink worm sitting somewhere in the corner as an important part of this surrealistic world. All of this takes place in a beautiful naive landscape of crying willows, autumnal trees, yellow hills and soft blue sky which makes use of an extremely simple and even folk-style of depiction in order to create a nice contrast to the absolutely crazy character invention which happens in the foreground. The artwork itself is framed with a torn edge in black which gives an impression of a painting on canvas or an image from a book, thus making the artwork more real. The style of this piece of art is a wonderful combination of surreal character illustration, naive folk art and professional animation concept art, reminding me of the sketches of Tim Burton, the characters from the Sesame Street and the best British children’s illustration. With the saturated color palette featuring electric blue, vivid orange, rainbow caterpillar segments, earthy ochre, and sage green colors, the poster forms a striking composition that gives any room extra visual energy, humor, and personality. The poster is ideally suited for children in the age range of about 3 to 12 years who are capable of appreciating something wonderfully weird along with funny adults who still enjoy the art of absurd and surreal illustrations, among other types of visual comedy that requires double-takes and laughter both times. It serves perfectly as decoration in the children’s bedrooms, playrooms, or any space created for them, especially when the walls are in white or neutral tones. Funny, original, visually explosive, and possessing the artistic originality which takes it far away from ordinary children’s wall art, this poster featuring the grumpy bird and eyeball caterpillar brings a room to life and speaks about the exceptional imagination and great sense of humor of those people who live there and have no intention to be ordinary.
